Rennies
- a Future Landmark
y partner and I ventured to the beautiful Adelaide Hills township of Stirling on a crisp Sunday evening recently. Our destination was the recently acquired Rennies Café Restaurant. Rennies is establishing itself as a destination for good wine and traditional dishes.
With the café full of expectant diners we found a table next to the fire, which suited us nicely. On a crisp Adelaide Hills night, a bottle of red next to the fire was just what the doctor ordered.
The wine list at Rennies is extensive and shows the cafes intention to match good wine with good food. Our choice was the 1998 Annies Lane Shiraz. It was full of fruit and had the luscious vanilla finish of French oak, which is what I love about Annies Lane Shiraz. Bliss!
My choice of field mushrooms stuffed with fetta cheese served on a bed of spinach and roasted capsicum and drizzled with pesto was fantastic. The flavours worked well together, and the lift the fetta and pesto gave to the mushrooms tingled the taste buds. My partners prawn cocktail was big and filled the spot nicely. The Shiraz complemented these dishes superbly and set us looking for the next course.
I had ordered a main course of red curry from the specials board. I was looking forward to warming the insides with a good glass of red and an aromatic curry. The gravy, however, was a little watery and not quite flavoursome enough. My partners chicken and avocado pasta had a good combination of contrasting flavours. There were plenty of dishes to choose, and from viewing other diners selections they looked good.
We declined the offer of coffee and desert and decided to stick with the red. But there was a good selection of cakes and brewed coffee and tea on offer.
Rennies is an ideal place for a coffee and light meal on a Sunday afternoon after strolling around Stirling. The potential is there for Rennies Café Restaurant to become a Stirling landmark.
