Interests Protected, Improvements Gained

As 1999 draws to a close, the Police Association is busy on a number of fronts. The Government has finally reacted to our calls for a return to higher staffing levels. The task force set up to examine this issue will finalize its deliberations by the end of December.

Crime rates are up and police numbers are down, which is not in the best interests of our members or the community they serve. We have been able to protect members’ interests in the new Police Act and Regulations, and have gained improvements to the Police Complaints Authority legislation.

We are still confronted with a harsh industrial environment and the threats of economic rationalism. What we have proved yet again, however, is that collectively we can achieve a great deal - and that police officers will themselves take responsibility for protecting the police occupation.

On behalf of the committee of management, secretary, delegates, branch officials and staff, I extend to all members and their partners and families the compliments of the season and a safe and happy new year.
