Bowlers from clubs including Somerton, Woodville, Holdfast Bay and Clearview, gathered on the greens of the Somerton Bowling Club for the 1999-2000 season opening of the SA Police Bowling Club on October 10.
The weather was fine with clear skies but cloud developed later in the afternoon. Rain continually threatened towards the end of the day but stayed away.
The 128 participants extended a warm welcome to our patron, Commissioner Mal Hyde, who formally declared the season open.
His wife, Marcia, was presented with flowers by the presidents wife, Maureen Zuvich. Maureen then rolled the first jack and Commissioner Hyde put down the first bowl. His style showed some promise (for a first-timer) - a member in the future, I suspect, and annual membership subscription is only $5.
The 16 rinks of the bowling club were fully occupied, with a complete spectrum of bowling standards represented. The greens were running well, in spite of much rain which had fallen during the previous night.
There were some close scores and several rinks won both their games (one of 11 ends, the other of 12). Ivan Doerings rink was not quite good enough on 56 points(of a possible 63) running second to a rink of M. Broad, M. Peters, B. Broad and R. Peters on 57 points.
The host club was certainly to be complimented on the state of its facilities and its green.
