- The Matrix - a gripping sci-fi thriller with an interesting twist on life as we know it. A definite rental alternative this month, but only for the mature members of the family. The Matrix stars Keanu Reeves, Laurence Fishburne, Carrie-Anne Moss and Hugo Weaving.
- The Deep End Of The Ocean - by no means a thriller but certainly gripping and very entertaining. Starring Michelle Pfeiffer, Treat Williams and a very serious Woopi Goldberg, The Deep End Of The Ocean focuses on every parents nightmare - the abduction of a child. But this time the child returns some nine years later - and hes a complete stranger.
- Blade - a little gory for some, but certainly action-packed. In this futuristic thriller, Wesley Snipes has the power of an immortal, the soul of a human and the heart of a hero. In his quest for justice, hes joined by Stephen Dorff as they search out the undesirables of society. For the opportunity to win one of three Blade packs put your details on the back of a used envelope (but not your postcode) and address it to Mike Horsfall, Sturt Police Station (12) Blade. As a bonus, well also offer two copies of a recent sell-thru release, Wild Things - starring Kevin Bacon, Matt Dillon and Neve Campbell. Its a steamy thriller about two high school girls, their guidance counsellor and the local detective.
- Les Miserables - the legend that speaks for itself is now available for purchase. Starring Liam Neeson, Geoffrey Rush and Uma Thurman, the video release is a music-free version.
- Barneys Night Before Christmas - hes always been a huge hit with the children, and as Christmas approaches this might make the perfect gift. Barneys new release will teach children about Christmas tradition, the spirit of giving, working together and winter fun. Kids (and parents) can also sing along with all the favourite Christmas carols. For the opportunity to win one of three Barney packs put your details on the back of a used envelope (but not your postcode) and address it to Mike Horsfall, Sturt Police Station (12) Barney.
Those in the younger age group should check out Cool 90s - The Birth of the Cool Series. This CD introduces a great cross section of party-style music - comprising not the big hits - just the COOL HITS. If the likes of ICE T, Definition of Sound, Stereo MCs and KLF appeal to you, then so too will Cool Hits.
A Duet CD with a difference is presented in Reload. Old rocker Tom Jones teams up with some of musics greats to produce an album that leaves us wondering how he still does it. The first release is the single Burning Down the House, recorded with The Cardigans and released on September 20. Its full of the power and energy youd expect from Tom Jones.
A variety of musical tastes is catered for in the movie soundtrack Strange Planet, a contemporary comedy about New Years resolutions and the new millennium. Featuring some great today-music from Faithless, St Etienne, Regurgitator, Future Funk and others, the Strange Planet CD also has classic music from Soft Cell (Tainted Love, 1981) and Dusty Springfield (The Look of Love, 1967). This CD is recommended for all but the older music lover.
Many of us may be surprised at the music presented on the new CD by Deadstar. For some reason, the groups name associates it with heavy-metal rock, but this is certainly not the case. Somewhere Over the Radio introduces the listener to the lovely vocals of Caroline Kennedy and the smooth musical talents of the remaining band members. The only problem with Deadstar may be that its music is too polished to be popular. If you love good music then take time to listen to Somewhere Over the Radio.
Theres plenty of other new titles available, including the Tarzan Soundtrack by Phil Collins and Mark Mancina, Id Rather Eat Glass by Bijou Phillips and Box of Birds by The Church.
This month the Police Journal has a dozen or so assorted CDs to give away. For the opportunity to win one put your details on the back of a used envelope (but not your postcode) and address it to Mike Horsfall, Sturt Police Station (12) Assorted.
