A bill to amend the Police (Complaints and Disciplinary Proceedings) Act has been introduced into the South Australian Parliament, following the findings and recommendations of retired judge Iris Stevens review.
Unfortunately, the bill - introduced by Attorney-General, Trevor Griffin - fails to remedy adequately the ambiguities so clearly identified in the act by Mrs Stevens.
Police officers have, over many years, openly expressed the anguish which the PCAs processes have caused them, their partners and families. That they have suffered such anguish is simply unacceptable. PCA processes must be rectified without delay.
The Police Association is currently consulting with the Government on this issue, as it is on the police regulations. The association will continue to lobby members of Parliament, and ensure a fair go for police officers who serve in this, the most accountable of all occupations.
