SA POLICE MOTORCYCLE CLUB |
|
| By Jim Andrew,

The SA Police Motorcycle Club hosted a dirt ride at one of the best available venues last May. The Coonalpyn property again provided a great array of riding conditions, which suit both the older and younger riders. Among the good number in attendance were new members, Steve Taylor, Lyn Dunstone and John Ryder. All members explored the many tracks and thoroughly enjoyed the weekend ride.
The club's first ride at the new property, via Murray Bridge, was hosted by Wayne Franh on June 20. When the dirt riders arrived, they examined the tracks, trees and other obstacles likely to get in the way. Club members always relish new and challenging properties.
Three club members entered the gruelling annual 24-hour reliability trial near Kapunda last July. The new members who ventured to Coonalpyn earlier in the year entered under the club name. Steve and Lyn started in the full course, while John Ryder entered the rally section.
The event started at noon on a Saturday. After the first lap (about six hours later), Lyn and Steve both struck trouble. Lyn's brand new Husky 410 encountered electrical and lighting problems. Steve was performing well in his first-ever off-road event but retired after losing too much time at a couple of controls.
John continued throughout the 24 hours and finished second overall in the rally class. In light of the boat anchor he was riding, this was a great result.
This demanding event is one of a kind in the world; and two club teams may enter and compete next year.
ComSec Greg Trickett organized a dirt ride at a new property via Monarto in late July. About a dozen members attended and soon found this new riding area great for riders and spectators alike. It is set in a quality area with two enduro-type tracks and wooded areas.
Al Coffee attended with his brand new Yami 400 and was helped to "run" it in. Members' children also enjoyed riding on a purpose-built kids' track next to the camping area.
The World Australian 500cc championships will be held at Phillip Island on the October long weekend. About eight club members will make the journey over and hopefully watch Mick Doohan ride and win on the Sunday.
Accommodation is already booked at Horsham for the stop-over as well as the usual Island venue.
Anyone interested in joining the club should contact any of the committee members listed.
