The Premier League Queensland has obtained sponsorship of $15,000 per year with an additional $5,000 per year prize money for an interstate lawn bowls challenge between the Premier League champions from Queensland and NSW. The money is being supplied by an RACQ-GIO alliance.
PLQ has now reached the next phase of formatting and launching the 2000 and 2001 structure for the inaugural competition. The level of interest created has been encouraging, with demand exceeding expectations. PLQ is considering various options, and an initial intention of 12 teams may be reviewed to increase the starting line up and provide opportunity for a greater number of clubs.
Already, one of the applying clubs has indicated that it is starting a supporters' club. This is to enable club members to get behind - and travel with - the side.
Established in 1964, the Warilla Bowls and Recreation Club on the picturesque south coast is about 20kms south of Wollongong. From humble beginnings, the club has grown into one of the largest bowling clubs in Australia. It boasts four excellent bowling greens and a magnificent eight-rink indoor bowling complex. The current membership of over 12,000 enjoys the most modern facilities, including:
- Restaurants.
- Gymnasium and fitness centre.
- Bottle shop.
- Travel agent.
Our own season will begin next month. All local clubs are gearing up for a busy six months or so of pennant competition.
The season will get under way officially on October 10 with an opening day at Somerton Bowling Club. Below is a summary of events to January 30, 2000.
