Dear Andy
My wife, Gillian, and I have a healthy, happy two-year-old daughter, Ashleigh Genevieve. For about 18 months we have been trying to have another baby. Sadly, we lost two pregnancies within 12 months, both towards the end of the first trimester.
Because of that history of miscarriage, Gillians latest pregnancy was closely monitored from the outset. At 11 weeks gestation we had an ultrasound examination that revealed a worrying shadow. After several more weeks, a number of ultrasounds and an amniocentesis, we were told that our baby, an active girl, had Turners Syndrome, a chromosomal abnormality, and other associated health problems. The prognosis was very poor and we were told that if she made it to term, she would have a short, difficult and painful life.
After a lot of research, discussion with doctors, family and friends, and painful soul-searching, we decided to accept the medical advice and let our daughter go. Gillian went into labour during the morning of Tuesday, July 6 and Jordan Elsie Jean was born at about 10:10pm that night. Jordan never had a chance to live; to know the love of our family; or to play with her mummy, daddy and big sister. Her short life ended as she was being born. Although Jordan never came home, she will always be a part of our family and our lives.
This letter is to say a heartfelt thank you to our family, friends, work-mates, medical professionals and the police welfare section, all of whom have helped us over the last six months. It hasnt always been easy, but now we can get on with our lives.
