41st Annual Carnival

The Australian Police Bowling Association carnival opening was preceded by a heavy downpour in Perth recently. The greens at Yokine Bowling Club were consequently heavy (10 - 10.5 seconds) on Sunday April 18. They improved during the following days as participants bowled at two other venues: Osborne Park and Manning Bowling clubs.

The greens at Manning were by far the fastest, particularly on Thursday, April 22. The "experts" maintained that the greens were running at 18.5 seconds. Our fours side played its best game of the carnival that day. The side clearly handled the greens better than its Victorian opposition.

Earlier, the South Australian State side - playing against the local State side - had to contend with 20-second greens at Manning. That's quick.

The "sides" competition - which is decided by games won - appeared to be a runaway win by New South Wales, which won four. Victoria and Western Australia each won two. South Australia and Queensland each won one. The winning margins, however, indicated much closer competition. Each side - consisting of five rinks - played 21 ends (a total of 105 ends).

New South Wales beat SA, Victoria, WA and Queensland by eight, one, two and 17 shots respectively. The total shots for and against were:

The Victorian team was by far the most successful, winning the singles, pairs and fours Plate championship. Western Australia won the triples and fours championships while New South Wales won the singles Plate. South Australia won the pairs Plate and came runner-up in the fours Plate.

Our successful pair in the pairs Plate was past president, Mike Powell, and Treasurer Howard Herde.

The pair had initially qualified for the "Plate" when they were beaten in a close game by Bob Grimes and Alan Lewis of New South Wales. They reached the final after three more hard-fought games to play off against Bill Thomas and John Brereton of New South Wales. That combination had qualified for the "Plate" when it was beaten in its first game by the eventual winners of the pairs championship, father-and-son combination, Phil and Ken Stevens of Victoria. This was the first time a father-and-son combination had won at the carnival.

Last year's singles champion, Lindsay Yeo, lost in the second round to one of this year's finalists, Trevor Melotte of Victoria. Our singles Plate winner, Trevor Gregory, lost to the eventual winner of the "Plate", Noel Blake of Victoria. Trevor was holding "game" three times on 24 shots but allowed the eventual winner to get in under his guard to win 25/24.

The carnival will be held in Adelaide next year.
