AT THE CINEMA

Encounter in the Third Dimension

Encounter in the Third Dimension is a venture into the realm of 3D filmmaking. It takes viewers on the wildest adventure ever created for the giant screen - an adventure so real “you may even believe you are really there”.

This latest release at Adelaide’s IMAX is simply outstanding. It’s an exciting crash course in adventure, conducted by a dizzy professor (Stuart Pankin), a flying robot and Elvira - Mistress of the Dark.

Together the crew presents a 3D experience equal to none. If you’ve been waiting for the right moment to visit the Adelaide IMAX, now is the time. Whether you’re an adult or a child - or a child in adults clothing - Encounter in the Third Dimension will not disappoint.

To win a double pass put your details (but not your postcode) on the back of a used envelope and address it to Mike Horsfall, Sturt Police Station (12) IMAX.

ON VIDEO

The Police Journal has previously reviewed Wild America and Zeus and Roxanne. But Roadshow now releases them under the Family Classics for Winter Nights category. Both releases feature great family viewing and are available at a very reasonable price.

Wild America

Sit down with the kids (or watch it alone) and take a ride on the wild side in Wild America. Based on a true story, this great action film - featuring three gutsy young kids who get in all sorts of trouble - is brilliant. Wild America is a great action and adventure movie suitable for all ages. It’s available now at an RRP of $19.95.

Zeus and Roxanne

In the tradition of Free Willy, this special release can only be classed as family fun and excitement. Zeus, a ruff-house of a dog, and Roxanne, the delightful dolphin, bond into a wonderful relationship that brings together two single parents and their children. Australian George Miller has directed an irresistible adventure suitable for the whole family. Zeus and Roxanne stars Steve Guttenberg and Kathleen Quinlan and is available now at a special price of only $14.95.

To win a copy of each of these titles put your details (but not your postcode) on the back of a used envelope and address it to Mike Horsfall, Sturt Police Station (12) Videos.

Saving Private Ryan

No video review would be complete without mention of this incredible title. Available for rental on June 7, Saving Private Ryan is set to continue it’s cinema success and become the biggest rental event ever. Having received five Academy Awards and two Golden Globe Awards, the theatrical quality of Saving Private Ryan cannot be disputed. Be prepared, however, as the video runs for about 170 minutes and is quite graphic - but so is war.

Rush Hour

Also on the “must-hire” list this month is Rush Hour. Jackie Chan (Rumble in the Bronx) and Chris Tucker (The Fifth Element) are thrown together as two detectives from opposite sides of the world. Forming the most unlikely team, they’re out to rock the streets of LA with classic Kung Fu action and some ‘90s homeboy attitude. Surprisingly the combination works well in a movie packed with action and full of laughs. Rush Hour - The fastest hands in the East versus the biggest mouth in the West.

ON CD

Black Taxi

More home-grown music is presented in the latest album from Black Taxi. Saturday Street is the follow-up to the group’s debut CD, Taken For A Ride. The tracks move perfectly through a number of styles, from swings to ballads, through to funk, blues and country gospel.

The original band featured some 20 musicians - this number has grown to over 40, including vocalists Leah Cottrell, April Ronsisvale, Yasmin Shoobridge, and newcomer Rachael Kennedy.

Also in Black Taxi are Gerry and Jack Pantazis, Enio Pozzebon and David Ross. Whether you’re enjoying the company of friends or capturing a solitary moment, Saturday Street will suit. It’s available now through Festival Music.

Disney Duets - A Family Celebration

While this CD is particularly suited to the young ones, it will conjure up some distant memories for the mature listener. Some famous Australian personalities such as Joe Camileri, Red Symons, Tommy Emmanuel and Debbie Byrne have joined forces with their children to produce a collection of Walt Disney Classics. Part proceeds from all sales will go to the Children’s Hospital in each capital city, so buyers will experience a unique collection of music, and donate to a worthy cause as well.

To win a CD put your details (but not your postcode) on the back of a used envelope and address it to Mike Horsfall, Sturt Police Station (12) DUETS.
