AT THE CINEMA

TANGO

“A smoky, lush blend of muted lights and colour, of intoxicating dance and the richest tango music you could ever imagine,” says the Los Angles Times of Tango.

With such an inspiring review, the success of Tango is all but guaranteed. Showing now at Adelaide’s Nova Cinema, this captivating film portrays a sensual screen tribute to the most passionate form of dance, the tango.

A product of Argentina, Tango explodes with passion as it captures the soul of the dance in a mingling of reality and dreams. But there’s a sense of history too as flickering cuts from the movies of long ago weave on distant screens, providing subtle incites of the tango of the past.

For lovers of passion and the creativity of dance, travel to the East End and experience Tango.

LOLITA

Adapted from the classic novel by Vladimir Nahokov, Lolita is a tragedy of obsession - a profoundly moving story of a forbidden love affair and its shattering consequences.

Starring Jeremy Irons as Humbert Humbert; Melanie Griffith as the widow, Charlotte; and Dominique Swain as Lolita, this movie has received its fair share of both criticism and praise. But is it an example of modern art, or simply an excuse to exhibit child exploitation. If we acknowledge the ability of our censors, and respect the decisions of Parliament, then we must conclude the former. If Lolita focuses on paedophilia, it simply wouldn’t be available for public screening.

Before the film is condemned, perhaps it should first be seen so as to allow informed commentary. Lolita is rated R and screening in Adelaide at Palace East End and Greater Union Marion.

THE RUGRATS - SEARCH FOR REPTAR

Last month’s release of The Rugrats Movie sees the release of a new title on PlayStation, The Rugrats - Search for Reptar. While this may be more suitably placed in Console Games, it continues the entertainment delivered in the cinema release. All the wonderful characters are there, together with all the voices and music from the award winning series.

Targeted at the six to 12-year-old child, Search for Reptar is one of the most graphically true games of this format we’ve seen to date - its almost like watching an episode of the television show.

The game lets players control Tommy, Chuckie, Angelica, Phil and Lil as they embark on a variety of captivating adventures.

The Rugrats - Search for Reptar is available now at all major and independent retail outlets for a suggested retail price of $79.95. It is highly recommended.

MARIGOLD SKY - HALL & OATES

Celebrating their 25th year of recording together, Daryl Hall and John Oates are now eligible for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Their new album, Marigold Sky, (the first for seven years) features a dozen new songs, all unmistakably Hall & Oates.

The tracks introduce some new twists, but still maintain the success of past style. “We work from the heart... That’s where the passion comes from,” Hall explains.

Marigold Sky is available now at an RRP of $29.95. It’s recommended for fans of Hall and Oates and anyone interested in easy listening music.

SWEET LIFE - RENÉE GEYER

She’s been singing since she was 15 years old, and making records since she was 19. Renée Geyer is a name readily associated with the Australian music scene. After spending nine years in America, she has now returned home to work and live, perhaps to soak up the Sweet Life.

Her latest CD release features a great range of music - all purely Geyer. She has a style of her own and lovers of her previous releases will want Sweet Life.
