Windows 98 Performance Enhancements
Those lucky enough to have Internet access at work will probably keep their Internet browser running in the background of the PC all day long. That way its ready and waiting when quick access is needed.
Unfortunately, not all of us maintain access at work, and few of us can afford a permanent connection at home. So, rather than dig deep into ones pockets, it might be more worthwhile to create an Address toolbar that gives you quick access to your favourite Web sites?
Creating the Address toolbar is easy - just right-click on your taskbar (normally found at the bottom of the screen) and select Toolbars > Address from the menu. The Address toolbar instantly appears on your taskbar, and you can move it to any place on your desktop by clicking and dragging it.
If you want the Address toolbar to always be in view, right-click on it and select Always On Top from the shortcut menu. You can also Auto Hide the bar so it slides away when not in use, just like the taskbar or Office toolbar.
One of the big features of Windows 98 is the easy access to on-line support. At any time after installation, all users have the ability to access the Windows Update site by simply clicking on the icon on the start menu. But if youre not on the net you dont get the service.
A word of warning to all new users of Windows 98 - dont think your current installation is adequate. Your first visit to Windows Update will probably supply you with a very large list of suggested upgrades. Many of them will protect your programs while accessing the Internet or checking e-mail, and others will enhance the performance of your PC and installed games. As the screenshot indicates you might expect to spend in excess of two hours downloading updates, so be prepared.
The list of software available will include Windows Critical Update Notification. After installation, this application runs in the background and whenever youre on-line it will automatically check for updates which are critical to the wellbeing of your PCs programs. This will prove to be most worthwhile, as the frequency of malicious hacking seems to plague the PC industry. Visit microsoft.com on the Internet for more important headlines, contests, free downloads, fun stuff to read and tips and tricks.
