Visiting Bungaree Station
With Police Association president, Peter Alexander, and his wife, Joan, 47 members of the Retired Police Officers Association enjoyed a trip to Bungaree Station (12 kms north of Clare) last month.
The party travelled via Port Wakefield, Balaklava, Clare and Blythe. A tour of the station included:
- The shearers quarters.
- The single mens quarters.
- Stable yards (now used by honeymooners and called the stud house).
- Garden area.
- Church (built by the original Hawkers).
- The woolsheds (where a three-course meal was served).
As tour guide, Mrs Hawker enlightened members as to the hardships faced by her great-grandfather. He and his party arrived in Bungaree from NSW with a large flock of sheep.
After seeing the gum trees and surroundings of Bungaree, Mr Hawker decided that hed found the place he was seeking. It was chosen as the future home for the Hawker family.
Members returned to Adelaide via Clare Valley. They recommend the trip to anyone interested in South Australian history.
Picnic
The Retired Police Officers Association picnic will be held at Fort Largs Police Academy on 24 October. To convey members unable to arrange transport, a bus will be supplied. It will leave the Police Club (time TBA) and travel via Port Road collecting members at stops which they nominate.
The RPOA secretary should be advised of attendance and bus pick-up points as soon as possible. This information is vital for catering arrangements.
Well Wishes
The RPOA wishes its secretary, Shirley Phillips, a speedy recovery from her illness.
