Games

Volleyball training for the SA Shrikes Police Volleyball Club has resumed following the Christmas break. For those members going to Stockholm for the World Police & Fire Games and/or Melbourne for the Australia and New Zealand Police Games, this training is essential.

As expected, the interest shown for the Melbourne games is high. We will be selecting a team from those people who want to play. Hopefully this situation will be to our advantage, as in the past we've not had the luxury of excess players. To be selected to play for teams in this competition, aspirants must attend training sessions.

Fundraising for the Games has been going on for some time but will increase in the next few months. The club has once again obtained tickets for the Australian Central Credit Union Community Lottery. Prizes in this raffle are excellent. First and second prizes are Mitsubishi Lancers. In total, the lottery's 17 prizes are valued at $60,000. Tickets will be available from Club members after 13 January. Purchasing tickets in this lottery and supporting other fundraising ventures will greatly assist the club.

Rule Changes

The World Indoor Volleyball Council recently voted to change the rules to make every serve worth a point. Previously, teams had to win the serve before playing for a point. To complement this change, the length of the game will also change: each game will be increased from 15 points to 25 points. These changes are expected to speed up the game and make it more exciting as the teams will have to attack rather than rely on defending a lead. This new rule is to commence after 1 January, 1999. From information received, it will be implemented by all grades of competition.

Training

Training is held on Wednesdays at the MFS gym, Wakefield Street, Adelaide, from 5:30pm. These facilities are air-conditioned and provided free to members. Anyone interested in participating should contact me (8207 9910) or attend on the night.
