Finals Time

The cream of the AFL’s elite has risen to the top: Adelaide has won the 1998 premiership.

Most of the local football is now complete with only a handful of grand finals to be played. Only a few police players are competing in these grand finals.

Shannon Van Soest won “best” for Tea Tree Gully in its A2 amateur grand final loss. Jeremy Canham played in a one-point win over Reynella in the Southern League grand final. Stephen Pitt played in Norwood’s finals loss to arch rivals Port Adelaide recently while Jeremy Snowden and Sam Giles will play in the Barossa and Light League grand final. Nuriootpa hasn’t lost a game all year.

Snowden hasn’t enjoyed a grand final victory as yet, but has played in runner-up sides. He was named in the best players in the second semi-final at full back.

National Carnival

The SAPOL football team leaves for Victoria to compete in the national carnival in fewer than three weeks. Currently, the team has 24 definite starters and another five or six who may attend.

Coach Paul Sinor will have something of a headache deciding who to pick with such a strong squad, especially in the big-man department. Most of the new recruits from the academy are big lads. If the weather in Melbourne is fine, these big men can be used to our advantage. We will soon know if our status as the best police football team at the carnival has been retained.

Legacy Cup

When the team returns from Melbourne there will remain one more cup to win. The Legacy Cup this year will be played at the Warradale Army Barracks oval on 18 October.

An earlier game will be between the MFS and the Army at 12:30 followed by Police v MFS at 2:30. This will be a family day with police, MFS, army, CFS, SES and ambulance displays. The cost of entry will be by way of donation but the main game is always a very competitive and skilful affair. The team won the cup last year for the first time in a few years. It is hoped the trend continues.
