The SAPOL soccer team committee is already preparing for the Australia and New Zealand Police Games to be held in Melbourne in November 1999. Beginning preparations this early may seem premature, but past experience has shown that it pays to be well organized. Never was this more evident than when the team won a gold medal in Wanganui, New Zealand, as a result of good organization, training and a few sterling performances.

The team is currently recruiting both new players and the “old regulars”. The committee has been alerted to the notion of injecting new blood into the team, so all currently-serving members (including trainees) are invited to nominate for playing positions.

Members who wish to participate must be identified now so that a current players list can be compiled for trial matches between now and November. And members must nominate irrespective of whether they have played before. Current player postings and contact numbers are required.

Past team members have found participation with the SAPOL soccer team enjoyable and satisfying, be it on tour or simply in matches against other services or organizations. It’s a great opportunity to mix with other members from all areas of SAPOL. Enquiries are currently under way to have a team entered in a summer seven-a-side competition.

Co-ordinating meetings with players on various shifts throughout SAPOL is a herculean task for the committee. Contact can be made by telephone, e-mail or internal mail. Nominations will remain open indefinitely.

Committee members whom players should call for the purpose of nominating include:

CENTRAL AREA:

Inspector Ferdi Pit (Human Resource Branch)
(City and West) Ph: 8204 2288.

Senior Constable Troy Meuris. (STAR Division)
Ph: 8207 4129.

NORTHERN AREA:

Senior Constable Simon Bell (Holden Hill CIB)
Ph: 8207 6075.

Senior Constable John DeCandia (Holden Hill CIB)
Ph: 8207 6069.

SOUTHERN AREA:

Constable Jason Whitehead (Sturt Patrols)
Ph: 8207 4787.
