Grand Final Success - At Last

The SA Shrikes Police Volleyball Club competed in the Volleyball SA A-grade grand final against the Grave Diggers at the Superdrome in August.

Our team members included:

Chris Payne (captain)
Peter Rodney
Cathy Vanderbiezen
Rita Salzgeber
Graham Wasley
Mark Dobson
Dave Wilton

Steave Speake was the only regular team member not available.

The match started with a loss in the first set, 15 to 5, which took us by surprise and put extra pressure on the team. The next three games saw the team play with much more commitment in getting to the ball. We won these games with scores of 15 to 12, 15 to 13 and 15 to 11.

This was a great reversal of the four previous grand final encounters in which we won the first game but managed to lose after five sets. On this night both teams played extremely well and were a credit to the competition.

The standard had improved considerably from the beginning of the season and will probably continue to improve as more teams become involved in the coming season.

Games 1999

The next Australia and New Zealand Police Games are to be held in Melbourne in November 1999. With only a short distance to travel at low costs, many members are interested in attending these games.

Most states are expected to be represented, and we should be able to compete in various volleyball competitions. The standard of competition will be very high - SA Shrikes will need to train extremely hard to be competitive.

Anyone interested in playing volleyball at these games should contact me at Salisbury on 8207 9910. Team training sessions are held on Wednesdays at 5:30pm in the MFS gym.
