Dear Peter,
Please accept my resignation from the Police Association of South Australia, effective 1 July, 1998, due to my retirement from the South Australian Police Force.
After 39 years service, I feel the time has come for me to give it away.
I wish you and members all the best and hope you are successful in your current pay claims.
Tony King
Sergeant 314/8
Murray Division
Dear Peter,
After 33-and-a-half years of service I have decided its time that I filled in my last PD39 on reaching the grand age of 50. I had planned on staying a further seven or eight years but family health reasons, the current industrial climate and the Focus 21 fracas made my decision to retire early all the more easy. Effectively, my last day of service is 1 July, 1998. It is therefore with some reticence I tender my resignation from the Police Association.
I have in the past not been short on words, so it will surprise some people that my parting comments are somewhat economical. I wish all members the very best for the future, and through the efforts of the Association the working conditions and pay that is best for them and their families. Listen to your hearts, chase those dreams, and enjoy life.
Goodbye all
Jim Crawford
Dear Andy,
Please accept my resignation from the Police Association effective from 2 July, 1998.
I look back philosophically at the time Ive spent in the job and liken it to the great staircase banister of life. Well, its been smooth sliding, that is until I climbed onto the rickety banister of SAPOL. I have no particular regrets about joining the job as Ive seen and done some interesting things and spoken to some of the most inspiring individuals on this great land. Not all of my experiences have been rosy, and I put the worst of them down to good old character building. Im jumping off this old banister before I slide into that big wooden ball thingy at the end of all staircases, and Im off to teach English in Japan for a couple of years. Ill be sending positive-vibe thoughts to those who I worked with, and I leave you with this advice. As you slide down SAPOLs rickety banister, get past the rough wood and make sure that someone you dont like gets all the splinters.
Sayonara, good luck on duty now and for the future.
Simon Livingstone
Salisbury Patrols
Dear Peter and members,
WHOOSH! That was 44 years of my life in uniform. The first 71/2 with the RAN, the last 371/2 with The South Australia Police Department and the Association. It is now time to hang up another hat. My last day of service being 15 July, 1998.
I owe my thanks to the Association for the great support afforded my family and myself on a number of issues. It is nice to know that helping hand remains outstretched.
I have fond memories of:
- Learning to ride a motorcycle outfit on the sand dunes at West Beach 30 metres above where I now have a caravan parked.
- Policing our own mini Croatian/Serbian war at Whyalla.
- My 13 years as a member of the Band Branch as it built up to Worlds-best status.
- The added delight when, after 16 years, being invited to augment the ranks to attend the 1990 Great Britain tour.
- The Royal Tournament and the Edinburgh Tattoo.
- The hallowed days of mixed patrols and shift supervisors at Para Hills.
I leave from my final posting of 18 years at Elizabeth, a division where members have been apprehensive of being posted, but from where very few want to go elsewhere.
Anyway, I will soon haul that caravan out and go nomadic, but I shall have fond memories of the many friends and associates of all ranks and positions under the umbrella of the Department and the Association as I wish you all the best for the future.
Yours Sincerely
Randall Kellas
Senior Constable 1405/6

Dear Peter,
In the 31 years of active police service, this is the first time I have had occasion to communicate, and it is to inform you of my retirement from the South Australian Police Force, my last day of service being 15 July, 1998.
Although I have never called on the Association for legal representation, I am confident that if this expertise were required, you would be there with guns ablazing.
I was very proud of my role as a policeman and felt that my little contribution had the desired effect on a number of people with whom I have associated, both in and out of the job.
I wish to thank you and my many friends and associates for their support over the years. Good luck and God Bless.

Sergeant 1767/5

Dear Peter,
Please accept my resignation from the Police Association of South Australia due to retirement. My last day of service is to be 29.07.98.
My best wishes go to everyone I have been associated with during my 34 years in SAPOL. In particular to all ex and current members who have passed through my team since 1986. I have many fond memories of each one. Thanks for all the good times. Overall I have no regrets and the pleasures have far outweighed the odd disappointment.
Having been the Darlington association delegate between 1990 and 1996 during two pay disputes, I do appreciate what the Association does for its members. I wish the Association, committee and delegates all the success for the current dispute and for the future.
Yours Sincerely

Dear Peter,
I hereby tender my resignation from PASA due to my retiring on invalidity (knee) after 23 years. I would like to wish you and the members of the SAPD all the best for the future and thank the PASA for looking after its members.
It could never be said that life in the Police Department is boring; it has its ups and downs like anything else, but the ups far outweigh the downs. What other job in the world today can give you what being a policeman can. The Police Department is full of marvellous men and women who are hard working and conscientious.
One thing that I would like to point out is that, one of the most important bits of PR that the Police Department can have, is to catch and arrest crooks. The vast majority of the public want justice for victims and to see the police catch the person who either robbed or hurt them in some way.
There is a need for a mixture of both academic and street wise police officers, but lets not get too carried away with the academic side. The Police Department needs to attract people who first up want to be a police officer and not someone who joins just to see how far he or she can go up the ladder, because while they are clawing their way up the ladder, he or she is forgetting about the most important thing: protecting the public.
I thank the Police Department for looking after me over the past 23 years; I have had a fantastic time. I believe that if you work hard, and with the right intentions, you will be looked after.
I was asked by Assistant Commissioner Rob Lean if I had the time would I do it all over again. My answer was: Bloody oath, I would.
Thank You
Regards
Noel (Bumper) Leigh
Detective SC1G
