Club singles championship

By Graham Wakefield

Twenty-five SAPBC members played out some fierce, closely-fought matches in the initial elimination rounds of their annual singles championship in early December. As the event clashed with the first round of the State Pairs, several members were not able to take part.

At the end of a day’s play in excellent weather at the Holdfast Bay Bowling Club, only four members remained.

The final matches are scheduled for April 3 at Glenelg Bowling Club as part of the SAPBC closing day. Left to compete for club champion and the singles plate are:

  • Cos Caviauolo and Trevor Gregory (competing for the singles championship).
  • Peter Jalfon and Eric Flynn (competing for the singles plate).

Club 4s (Ringer Shield)

SAPBC members competed in a club fours competition for the coveted Ringer Shield at the Grange Bowling Club on a balmy evening in mid-December. Sadly, and at short notice, 10 members had to withdraw from the event, leaving the tournament director to find enough replacement players to field five rinks.

The game played out in high spirits with members of both sides making some competitive shots. (See the final scores in the next column.)

Grange retained the Ringer Shield with a winning margin of two shots. The final score: 70-68.

Mixed fours

A mixed fours event scheduled for last November but cancelled owing to the weather has been rescheduled to take place at Gawler on Sunday, February 27. It will replace the mufti pairs event which had been planned for Kensington-Marryatville.

Carnival update

The SAPBC committee has been working earnestly over the last few months to ensure that the upcoming 47th Australian Police Bowling Championships taking place at Holdfast Bay, from April 17 to 24, are a success. All venues required to hold the event have been booked and checked out to ensure they meet all requirements.

At this point, all major requirements have been addressed, leaving only the fine tuning to be undertaken.

Newsletter

The latest SAPBC newsletter is circulating among members and holds much important news on the upcoming carnival and ongoing club events.

Members should take special note of the section which deals with nomination for the carnival team and act on it with due haste, as the selectors soon need to know who is available.

Selection for the carnival team will be done in accordance with the club’s tournament selection policy. Early this year, the secretary will advise, in writing, those members who are selected.
