Health section of great use
Dear Andy
Timing really is everything, isn’t it? I admit it doesn’t take much
to make me laugh, but it really was too much when, just after spending
considerable time nagging (persuading?) my father to make an appointment
at the doctor, I happened to pick up a copy of the October 2004 Police
Journal and open it to Dr Rod Pearce’s article (Women’s health
advice best) on why women live longer than men. After picking
myself up from the floor, I showed it to my father. It was just the
ammunition I’d needed, and I used it to good effect.
On a more serious note, that is not the first time that information
from the health section has been of great use to me and my family.
Late last year, another article (Advances in asthma management,
November 2003) came in very handy when it came to re-assessing my
sister’s medication and asthma treatment programme with her GP; and
the article about palliative care in August 2004 was of great interest
to me, a nurse who worked in palliative care for several years.
Further on in that same issue of the October 2004 Police Journal,
I came across David Marr’s piece, In need of spring, which
was a nice reminder that spiritual and emotional health are just as
important as physical health - and just as fragile.
I remember once seeing a bumper sticker that read “Practice random
acts of kindness”. It made me smile, which I guess was an act of kindness
on the part of the car owner, and reading In need of spring
had much the same effect.
It is difficult to retain focus on “the important things”sometimes,
and little reminders such as these help, at least for a while - until
the next time I have to pay my credit card bill.
Yours sincerely

PS: By the way, Dad went to the doctor and is fine.
PASA assistance the best
Dear Andy
I thank, on behalf of my fiancée, family and myself, the Police
Association of SA for its assistance.
After serving 15 years, I have witnessed numerous displays of generosity
and kindness. This, for me, would take the mark as the best.
I can say that, without the assistance we received in obtaining
accommodation so quickly, our trip to Adelaide for medical treatment
for my fiancée would have been up in the air, to say the least.
The use of the army house on Strathfield Tce was wonderful. The use
of the academy facilities was fantastic. Even the help offered to
Debra so that she could continue some of her rehabilitation (use of
the library for family history research) was well beyond what we expected.
I cannot thank Superintendent John Peake and David Clarke of the
South Australia police academy enough for their assistance, caring
and, most of all, friendly attitudes.
I must ask that a special thank you be given to Sue Kroon, also
from the academy, for her help during our time there. She was a great
help to us.
Thank you again
