A successful 2004
We can now reflect on what has been another busy year for the Police
Association.
Enterprise Agreement 2004 - which members overwhelmingly endorsed
with a “Yes” vote of 95.6 per cent - has been ratified in the SA Industrial
Relations Commission.
I acknowledge that the Rann Government has made a serious commitment
to improving wages for South Australian police. Moreover, the new
rank structure was only possible with the commitment of the Commissioner
of Police.
From the association perspective, I acknowledge the efforts of the
committee of management, delegates, full-time officials and staff
in achieving the result.
It is anticipated that payment of back pay for the new rates will
be finalized by Christmas.
This agreement has been a significant one for SA police officers.
The association hopes it will be good for morale and retention.
Another important task this year was for the association to make
its submission to the Select Committee of the Legislative Council
examing the staffing, resourcing and efficiency of SAPOL. That required
a significant commitment, and we look forward to the committee handing
down its report in the New Year.
We have a number of challenges to deal with in the year ahead. They
include the ongoing issue of staffing levels, superannuation, and
the appropriate funding of SAPOL.
As an association, we have the capacity to meet those challenges.
And, in that regard, I particularly acknowledge you, the member.
Our 99.6 per cent membership rate is the single most important factor
in any success we achieve. Thank you for your loyalty and support
to your association.
On behalf of the association committee, delegates, full-time officials
and staff, I wish you, and your partners and families, a safe and
happy Christmas. I hope 2005 is a good year for us all.
