The Police Federation of Australia expects to see construction of
the nation’s long-awaited national police memorial complete by 2006.
To be built in Canberra’s Parliamentary Triangle, the $2.4 million
monument will serve as an everlasting tribute to the hundreds of Australian
police officers killed in the line of duty.
The Police Federation expects that the Kings Park site earmarked
for the memorial will soon win the formal endorsement of the Canberra
National Memorial Committee.
The Federal Government, State and Territory governments, and the
Police Federation of Australia have agreed to provide a third each
of the $2.4 million needed to build the memorial.
To contribute its $800,000 share, the federation has set up a fundraising
charity known as The National Police Memorial. Police credit unions
across Australia have agreed to play their part in the fundraising
process.
Accordingly, SA’s Police Credit Union has provided an account (No.
5181464, National Police Memorial) into which PASA members and the
public alike may make donations toward the memorial’s construction.
The collective contribution will bring about more than the valued
shrine itself. To future generations, it will help bring understanding
and appreciation of the great sacrifice of the bravely fallen.
