What salary is used
to determine my superannuation contributions and benefits?
Your superannuation salary is used to determine your fortnightly member
superannuation contributions and your superannuation benefits upon
separation from SAPOL.
Superannuation salary
Your superannuation salary is the base salary applicable to the
highest rank and increment level you have actually attained in a permanent
position within SAPOL. However, if you hold the rank of senior sergeant
or below and have been classified as a shift-worker during your service
as a police officer, your superannuation salary is your base salary
(based on highest rank and increment level) plus a 10 per cent shiftwork
build-up. If you have not been classified as a shift-worker during
your service, your superannuation salary is your base salary.
If you elect to move to a position within SAPOL, at a lower rank
and increment level, your superannuation salary will be automatically
maintained on the base salary of your higher rank and increment level
attained. For example, if you are or have been appointed to a permanent
position as a senior sergeant and then elect to move to a position
which is at the level of sergeant or lower, your superannuation salary
will be automatically maintained at the level of senior sergeant.
In the event a member’s rank and increment level is reduced to a
lower level for disciplinary reasons, the superannuation salary will
be reduced. The superannuation salary will be averaged between the
higher and lower positions calculated on the number of months the
member has been paid at each level during his or her service.
Superannuation contributions
Your superannuation contributions are calculated on the basis of
your superannuation salary as at 31 March each year and are payable
from the following July. If you are promoted or receive a pay rise
after 31 March, your superannuation contributions will not change
until the following year.
Superannuation benefits
Your superannuation benefits are based on your superannuation salary
(highest rank and increment level) which is payable at the date of
separation. In the event there is a pay rise granted after your date
of separation and then backdated to a date prior to your date of separation,
your superannuation benefit will be recalculated using the new superannuation
salary.
