Leave Bank Fund
In a busy modern world we take things for granted – our partners,
families and friends are the best example.
We do the same even in our working lives. It does one good sometimes
to reflect on the positives. The Police Leave Bank Fund fits perfectly
into that category.
Next time you come back to work a day early from annual leave, because
you contributed a working day to the fund, think about why you did
it. Members voluntarily forego one day’s leave, which is credited
to the fund and used to assist any member who has exhausted all his
or her sick leave.
Without access to the leave bank, members suffering long-term illness
would have to access superannuation benefits, or apply for the much
inferior government benefits.
The leave bank assistance is monitored by a committee and approved
in three-month periods. The fund was established in the 1950s by the
Police Association and the Commissioner of Police, to assist sworn
members.
The Commissioner of Police is the final authority in deciding whether
or not assistance will be granted in any particular case.
Leave bank is like all forms of insurance: you hope you will never
need to call upon it, but it is good to know it is there.
The Police Leave Bank is a great example of the men and women in
the police occupation assisting each other in difficult times.
To those who introduced it, and those who maintain the fund, I dips
me lid.
