SA Police Motorcycle Club

By Jim Andrew President

Toy Run

The annual Toy Run from Glenelg to Hahndorf was the SA Police Motorcycle Club’s last event for 2003. On Sunday, December 14, about 25 members took the relatively hassle-free ride up through the Adelaide Hills. With the kids’ presents deposited at Hahndorf Oval, members took time to enjoy the bike displays, food and drink, before riding back through the hills. The club intends to participate again this year.

Office-holders

From a meeting of the club committee early this year, Brenton Inglis emerged as the new competition secretary. He has, with Greg Trickett’s help, organized some inspiring rides for 2004.

In the mix are events for both dirt- and road-riders, as well as social occasions for members and their families. The club is confident that Brenton will excel in his new role.

Former speedie and long-standing club member, Al Coffey, volunteered again for the treasurer’s position, while long-time member, Mick Klose, has returned to his old job of secretary. Matt Nairne is again managing the road rides; the first is scheduled for the end of March.

Membership, sponsorship

The committee has again decided to waive the usual $20 annual membership fee this year, for both existing and new members. Committee members hope this year to increase membership from all areas of SAPOL, including recruits.

Inquiries from late 2003 showed clearly that many people out there harbour great interest in motorcycles. They should contact any of the committee members and receive the benefits the club has to offer.

The club has again secured Peter Stevens Motorcycles as its major sponsor, which has, in turn, offered club members substantial discounts on parts and accessories.

Events

Dirt: Scheduled dirt rides this year include campaways at the Coorong, Coonalpyn, and the Riverland, while the major weekend away toward the end of the year – at a venue to be decided – may be the West Coast. As well, day trail rides are planned to take place in various regions, including Kapunda, Murray Bridge and southern areas.

Road: Matt Nairne plans to run a road ride at least once a month, and weekday rides for shift-workers. Rides will cover areas both north and south of the city.

Members have attended and enjoyed the Phillip Island Superbikes and MotoGP; the club hopes to see them return this year as part of an organized event. Interest has also emerged in attending the Australian Superbike Championships at Mallala later this year.

The committee has planned a family day, at which it will provide a free barbeque for members. This is likely to be scheduled for an afternoon, following an early-morning ride for both road- and dirt-riders.

Queries should be directed to any of the SA Police Motorcycle Club committee members.
