Fantastic facility
Dear Andy
On Friday, November 28, 2003, I arranged for a retirement dinner
at the Police Club for South Coast LSA executive assistant, Helen
Smith, a long-serving member of SAPOL.
I wish to publicly acknowledge the fantastic efforts of the club
staff, in particular, Trevor and Heather, for ensuring the night was
one to be remembered.
The night was an overwhelming success with many people who attended
commenting to me that it was “the best retirement show they had been
to”.
The food and service provided was exceptional, and the effort that
was gone to, in particular to accommodate my request to hold the function
on the ground floor, was much appreciated.
Being able to write a letter of this nature about the club just reinforces
to me what a fantastic facility we have, and I would urge anyone planning
on holding a function in the future to consider using the facilities
themselves. If our experience is anything to go by, they will not
be disappointed.

Association makes difference
Dear Andy
I am sorry for not writing sooner. I have been waiting for the final
approval for my plight to come in. Now that it is in hand,
I want to express my sincere thanks to the association for the support
and assistance I have received recently.
On reflection, had it not been for the tireless negotiations and
support given to me by Tom Scheffler, I am not sure if I would have
been in the same position as I am now.
As you are aware, I had won a job I had always aspired to but, sadly,
a dispute over housing was looking like I was going to be precluded
from my position. The impact had a significant strain upon both my
family and me.
I have had a fortunate run in SAPOL; and I have never needed to call
upon the association to help me negotiate difficulties I had encountered
before. Tom and the staff put me at ease from the first moment. Thank
you for that.
We often hear and read stories of concern over management decisions.
I do not want to turn this letter into one of those. I need to express
my thanks to some of the people who supported me: Chief Insp Woollacott,
Snr Sergeants Growden and McLean, my working colleagues and the members
of my community. These people supported me throughout and often, as
I have since found out, were there with sleeves rolled up, so to speak,
to support me. Thank you.
To Chief Insp Fairney, I appreciate you were given a challenge that
needed to be addressed and only a short space of time to do it. I
thank you for your timely action.
My advice to my colleagues, should they be faced with a dilemma,
is to turn to the association: it is there for all of us and it does
make a difference. I hope to get through the next 18 years without
calling on it again, but if I do need to call, I will do so with confidence.
To all, thank you.

Pearce family history
Dear Sir
I have just read the story of the murder of Police Trooper Harry
Edmonds Pearce (Trooper’s murder an education, January 2002)
on the Police Journal Online.
I am researching the family history of this Pearce family for my
husband and have just come across this very interesting article of
which we knew nothing.
Is it possible to be put in contact with Jill Pearce, the policewoman
in your story (perhaps she could e-mail me), so we could fill in some
gaps in the family history? James Pearce was my husband’s great, great,
great grandfather.
Hoping you can be of some assistance to me.
With Regards

Family overwhelmed
Dear Andy
We would like to say a heartfelt thank you to the many colleagues
and friends of our much loved husband, father and grandpa, Roger Terence
Kappe, for their wonderful support and help we received from the onset
of Roger’s illness.
A special mention to Ruth Quick, Lou Costello and Glyn Jones for
their ongoing support.
Also to Elizabeth Police Station Social Club for purchasing the icemaker
for Roger – he was overwhelmed with the wonderful gesture, which gave
him the ice he needed, thank you.
To the management team at Elizabeth for your support, particularly
in taking the time to visit Roger on more than one occasion.
To David Marr and his colleagues at Welfare, thank you. Your continual
support is very much appreciated.
My family and I were overwhelmed by the attendance of police colleagues
at Roger’s funeral. I am sure Roger would have been equally as overwhelmed.
Thank you
Pauline, Tricia, Vicki and families
