Much achieved
in 2003
For the Police Association, 2003 has been another active year. Our
staffing campaign resulted in a commitment from government to commence
fast-track recruiting above natural attrition from January 2004. One
would hope the extra numbers improve the situation across SAPOL, particularly
in the patrol area.
We saw the new DNA laws come into operation with extended provisions,
for which the association had strongly lobbied. The benefits of this
legislation, in terms of crime detection and reduction, will be fully
realized in the years to come.
We also saw the new legislation to significantly increase penalties
for assaults on police.
The association continues to lobby in a number of areas, such as
police superannuation, expanded paedophile legislation, and protection
for police and their families from any form of intimidation.
We are currently structuring the association submission to the Parliamentary
Select Committee examining the staffing and resourcing of SAPOL.
As well, negotiations are under way regarding a new country housing
agreement.
The association claim for a new enterprise agreement in the coming
year is well advanced.
PASA continues to deliver improved services to its members. The increase
to $100,000 for life insurance has been well received.
Next year looks to be as great a challenge as was 2003. The association
looks forward to it with anticipation.
On behalf of the executive, secretary, staff and delegates, I wish
all members and their partners and families a merry Christmas, and
happy and prosperous New Year.
