National Police Bowling Carnival 2003
An SAPBC team went into this years National Police
Bowling Carnival determined to end a 17-year losing streak in the sides
competition. Triumph seemed within the teams grasp when it began with a
resounding win. But, in its third match against eventual winner New South
Wales, the team stumbled, emerged with its only loss of the competition and
again finished runner-up.
The carnival, held at the picturesque Moama Bowling Club in
early April, brought together teams from ever mainland state of Australia.
SA won in the triples through the combination of Karen
Grandfield, Graham Boyer and Nick Zuvich. This team created history when
Grandfield became the first female competitor to win a national title.
And, in another success for SA, Peter Baehnk, Tim Dodds, John
Morris and John McKnight won the fours plate competition.
The performance of other players, too, reflected great credit
on the SA team. Rex Heins finished runner-up to Ian Stanley (NSW) in the
singles plate competition.
Nick Zuvich and Bob Peters were put out in the quarter-finals
of the pairs competition. In the championship fours, Rex Heins, Graham Boyer,
Graham Wakefield and Danny Dahlitz were eliminated from the quarter-finals.
Also in the championship fours, Trevor Gregory, Lindsay Yeo, John Minagall and
Cos Cavaluolo reached but were eliminated from the semi-finals.
The final standings in the sides competition were:
- NSW (eight points).
- SA (six points).
- Vic (four points).
- WA (two points).
- Qld (zero).
