Tax time again

To help with your tax return, the occupational ruling for police officers has been included with the July Police Journal. If further information is required, visit the tax website at www.ato.gov.au click on “search and contents” and then search for “occupational rulings”.

An easy and convenient way to submit your tax return is by e-tax 2003. It is available free from the ATO. Tax returns generally take only 14 days to process. e-tax is available from July 1, 2003. For more information, visit the tax website at www.ato.gov.au

Work-related deductions

While you don’t need receipts if your deductions for work-related expenses are less than $301, you must be able to show how they relate to your income and how you calculated the amount claimed.

Helpful hints

  1. Double check your name, tax file number, date of birth, and your return is signed (if paper lodgement).
  2. Collect all payment summaries if you have worked for more than one employer.
  3. Check that Reportable Fringe Benefits are shown on the payment summary.
  4. Declare share dividends and any capital gains from sales of shares.
  5. Include Interest and Government allowances if received.
  6. The cost of purchasing, repairing and laundering uniform is deductible.
  7. Most donations and gifts are deductible. For confirmation, check the receipt or contact the organization.
  8. If claiming the family tax benefit (FTB) return you must lodge your 2003 FTB claim form with or after the 2003 return but before June 30, 2004.
  9. Remember the Medicare levy surcharge question is compulsory.
  10. Your private health fund will send a letter showing the health fund identification code. This is to be included if you are to claim the 30 per cent rebate or an exemption from the Medicare levy surcharge.
