Chaplain to Hills Murray Police

The dance of life

Fancy a dance? What music would you choose? We recently had a ’70s night at home with friends. We fixed up the old record player and got out all the old records – and old memories, too.

After 15 years of marriage, I didn’t think there was much I didn’t know about my husband. How wrong I was. We didn’t share much common ground in music. I grew up with AC/DC, Skyhooks, Cold Chisel and Meatloaf, to name a few (now I’m showing my age). My husband preferred other less tasteful music.

I love to have the music on in the car when I drive. Listening and dancing to music can be soothing; it can help us to relax and unwind, or it can stir up the passion within. Regardless of your taste, though, it is the slowing down long enough to listen that’s important. Life is like a dance.

Have you ever watched kids on a merry-go-round, or listened to the rain slapping on the ground? Ever followed a butterfly’s erratic flight, or gazed at a sunset into the fading night? Slow down, don’t dance so fast. Time is short and the music won’t last.

Do you run through each day without time to pause? When you ask: “How are you?” do you hear the reply?

When the day is over, do you lie in your bed with the next hundred chores running through your head? Slow down, don’t dance so fast. Time is short and the music won’t last.

Have you ever told your child: “We’ll do it tomorrow” and, in your haste, not seen his sorrow? Have you lost touch with friends because you’re just too busy to call and say: “Hi”? You’d better slow down, don’t dance so fast. Time is short and the music won’t last.

When you race so fast to get somewhere, you miss half the fun of getting there. Sometimes it is on the journey of life that the growth and fun occurs. The destination is just a bonus.

When you hurry and worry through your day, it is like an unopened gift thrown away. Life isn’t a race. Try to take it slower and hear the music before the song is over.
