SA POLICE MOTORCYCLE CLUB

by Jim Andrew, President

The SA Police Motorcycle Club has taken on six new members who, as both recruits and experienced members of SAPOL, are mostly road-riders. They are keen to venture out with Matt Nairne and others on some of the state’s awesome roads.

As finer weather sets in, most roadies drag out their steads, dust them off and enjoy their road-riding. The dirt-riders – highly active for the last few months – have enjoyed many rides on varying terrain. The locations of the rides have included:

Monarto

Some keen dirt-riders ventured up to the Monarto property in early September. Greg Trickett, Fraser and others enjoyed the usual enduro, sand and motocross tracks this property provides.

Big Desert State Park

Dirt-riders ventured into new properties and riding areas on their main camp-away for the year in mid-October.

Seven club members drove 30-odd km into Victoria from Pinaroo on a Friday night and arrived at the Big Desert State Park.

Bud Abbott, Al Coffey, Ricky Dixon and I teamed up, Brenton and Keith Inglis paired off and Scotty Copley went solo.

The Saturday brought great weather, as the riders ventured out into a huge expanse of land, mainly 4WD-type tracks and “deep” sand. Scotty relished his time on a Husky 410 and showed a lot of promise on the dirt.

The riders covered nearly 200km on the first day and later enjoyed the standard barbecue.

The 4WD tracks were, on the Sunday morning, a lot easier to ride on, and, as the day unfolded, the tracks and terrain became even better. Apart from the odd bike problem, no one emerged with injuries and the club expects to return to the area in 2003.

Coorong camp-away

Club members went on their last dirt ride for 2002 in late November. Greg Trickett secured the property – used by the club for 20 years – from the new owner. This special area offers a great grassed camping ground, huge sand hills that run for kilometres and, for fishing, a beach only 2km away. Greg Trickett led the way with an entire weekend of sand riding. This property is only available to the club and a select few others and worth any wait to use.

Road rides

Al Coffey and Lester Martin enjoyed the annual ride over to Phillip Island for the World Moto GP. They saw the likes of Rossi and Biaggi show everyone how it is done.

On the latest road ride, 12 club members ventured down through Strathalbyn, negotiating the great sweepers and curves for which that area is well known.

The annual MRA Toy Run on December 8 was another opportunity for club members to help out needy kids. Members met at a service station on Anzac Highway and participated in the ride with about 10,000 other riders. Other rides are planned for the Christmas-New Year period.
