Grange Round Robin
The Round Robin Sleeper Day tournament was held at the Grange Bowling Club on October 10. The participating teams were those of the SAPBC, the Master Builders, Customs and the host club, Grange. After a fine days bowling, the SAPBC finished on top, with 22 points and 47 shots up.
Grange finished second (12 points and 15 shots up), the Master Builders third (nine points and minus 41 shots) and Customs fourth (seven points and minus 21 shots).
The best SAPBC rink was John McKnights, with three wins and 17 shots up. In the team were Col Davies (lead), Bryan Dowling (second), John Morris (third) and John McKnight (skip).
Opening Day
The official opening of the SA Police Bowling Club was held at the Glenelg Bowling Club on Sunday, October 13. Once the proceedings to open the season were over, a mixed fours competition began.
Winning the days competition, with two wins and 17 shots up, was the rink of John McKnight (lead), Faye Edwards (second), John Morris (third) and Merv Edwards (skip).
Winning the losers section, with 12 shots up, was the rink of Ruth Atkinson (lead), Graham Scott (second), Judy Scott (third) and Frank Atkinson (skip).
Emergency Services Day
The 000 Emergency Service Day was held at the Edwardstown Bowling Club in late October. Although the weather was fine and clear, the representation from services other than the police was disappointing.
In an address to those present, SAPBC president, Frank Holden, said this event had not been well supported in recent years. He indicated that the club would have to look seriously at the inclusion of the event in future programmes.
The day produced some good bowling, and all the winning rinks were those of the SAPBC. They included:
Lead Liz Boyer Karen Grandfield Danny Dahlitz Second Keith Jones Wayne Grandfield Graham Wakefield Third Allan Wallace Danny Fitzgerald Ivan Doering Skip Graham Boyer Peter Baehnk Nick Zuvich Club Singles Championship
Twenty-two full and associate SAPBC members gathered on the greens of the Holdfast Bay Bowling Club in early November to compete in the clubs annual singles championship.
Play began early in cool conditions and a sea breeze that set in for the day but this weather did not affect the high standard of some of the games. Some shock losers in the first round meant that previous club champions were relegated to the championship plate competition. Several early games were closely-fought affairs only decided when the last bowl played on the last end split tied scores.
At the end of the days play, the last four players left to decide the club championship and the club plate finals were Ken Furnell and John Morris (to play for the club championship), and Peter Carroll and Graham Wakefield (to play for the club plate).
Both finals will be played at Glenelg on the clubs closing day on Sunday, March 16, 2003, before a mixed fours competition scheduled for that day at 1pm.
