Memories brought back

Dear Andy

Just a few quick, complimentary words about the photos in the centre section of the Police Journal courtesy of the Police Historical Society. They are great and, gosh, they do bring back memories so long forgotten. I do hope you will continue to include them in future issues of the journal.

To set the record straight

Dear Andy

On November 12, 1999, an item appeared in The Advertiser, under the heading of Police Cover-up Claim, and stated that I had been accused of recycling a video surveillance tape belonging to two Hindley Street traders now charged with assault. The article identified me by name and photograph. This statement is incorrect and not what I related to the court.

I am now in a position to set the record straight.

I recycled a police department video surveillance tape in accordance with policy and procedure and, at the time, a master copy remained with Police Security Services Division (incidentally, the incident from which the assault allegations arose was not recorded on the tape, which is not unusual).

At no stage did my superiors, IIB or the Police Complaints Authority subject me to any investigation. My immediate superior also supported my claim of following the correct policy and procedure in relation to recycling the tape.

After almost three years of legal action, I am pleased to say I have been able to obtain judgement against The Advertiser and the matter has been settled.

I pass on thanks for the moral support I received from many colleagues, the Police Association and SAPOL in general. I also thank my lawyer, Morry Bailes of Tindall Gask Bentley, and barrister, Carey Goodall.
