The year in retrospect
The Police Association has, as expected, found 2002 a challenging year. We continue to operate in an uncertain industrial climate and a business environment still feeling the effects of the September 11 terrorist attacks on the US.
The Bali bombings have traumatized all Australians. Our thoughts and condolences go to those whose loved ones were tragically killed or injured.
Great sadness has also emerged from within the Police Association membership with a number of sudden deaths and serious illness. Our deep sympathy and support go to the families of the members concerned. As these family members have grieved, we have seen the great warmth and generosity of the police culture come into play and assist them.
Increased recruiting beyond natural attrition has continued over the last 12 months, with the number of members now at almost 4,000. This number, achieved as a result of the associations staffing campaign, must be a priority of and maintained by the new government. The issue of minimum staffing levels, however, remains the subject of debate.
To ensure all the member services it provides are appropriate for the future, the association is currently undertaking a review.
We continue to progress issues agreed between the Commissioner for Public Employment and the Police Association in Enterprise Agreement 2001, and plans are under way in relation to EB4.
On the issues of DNA, a paedophile register and assaults on police, the association has vigorously lobbied state parliamentarians.
With continued member support, the association looks forward to the challenges of 2003. On behalf of the committee of management, staff, delegates and branch officials, I wish all members and their families a happy and safe Christmas and a prosperous New Year.
