Dear Andy
Please accept my resignation from the Police Association of South Australia due to my retirement from SAPOL on June 30, 2002.
Without any question, the 43 years of service both in SAPOL and PASA have given me enormous memories of good times, tragedies, heroics and learning experiences by our younger members, but in an overriding sense, an irreplaceable feeling of pride in their achievements. Policing is like that because of the peculiar nature of the work and the special relationship that binds the community and police officers together.
Perhaps my saddest memories belong to those incidents and operational situations that affect police officers and their families when they are least able to cope with the impact. Good news travels fast and at times coincides with other events that bring happiness, but sadness and tragedy seem to come in their own timeframe when it is least expected. Police officers are often suffering themselves when called upon by the public to help them and show individual leadership.
I know that many operational police officers have found great comfort in being able to seek assistance from the Police Association and members of the Human Resources Service, sometime in parallel.
As I commence my retirement, I do so with great confidence that even though our youngest members are exposed to the greatest pressures operationally, administratively and judicially, they are being assisted by more experienced police officers and a significantly high level of public confidence and admiration. This, together with the excellent young leaders now being developed both here and overseas, positions us very well for the future.
To all the officers with whom it has been my pleasure to serve, I say thank you and well done in your own careers.
To Peter Alexander personally, thank you for the grey hairs and friendship and I wish you well for the future.
Kind regards
Neil McKenzie![]()

Dear Andy
I am retiring from SAPOL on August 30, 2002. Accordingly, I am resigning from the Police Association of SA on that date.
Since February 1961, I have needed to call for assistance from the association on several occasions. It is at those times that I was most grateful for the advice and help I received, not only from President Peter Alexander, but also from other officer bearers as far back as Ralph Tremethick.
During my time at SAPOL, I worked with many wonderful people and have many great memories. They will be with me forever. Sincerest thanks to everyone who assisted me during the last 41 years. I wish you, your colleagues and all SAPOL members the best of health and luck in the future.

Dear Andy
I wish to tender my resignation from the Police Association due to my resignation from SAPOL, my last day of service being September 6, 2002.
I have thoroughly enjoyed the last 15-and-a-half years in the job (give or take a moment or two). But I feel that it is time to move on to greener pastures. (I will keep you informed as to whether the grass is greener on the other side.)
Having drunk many cups of instant coffee for years, I have finally realized that life is too short to drink bad coffee. So I have taken the plunge and am opening a coffee franchise called Gloria Jeans Coffees.
To all those I have worked with at the many and varied locations around the state, I thank you for the good times and wish you all the best in whatever you decide to do with your lives. (Keep in touch. You know where to find me.)
My only piece of advice for those of you who get to the stage (some may never) where you no longer enjoy getting up and going to your job, and you are getting bitter and twisted (and you know who you are), just realize that there are many opportunities out there. You just need to go look for them. Do your research thoroughly and go for it.
For you who continue on in the job and make a career, just remember from whence you came and let your staff know (often) that you appreciate the great work they do.
For those I worked with at Port Augusta, my driving record did improve. However, there was the odd minor 204 here and there, including the postman I ran over in Strathalbyn. (It was his fault.)
To team 5, Hindley St, it was just as much fun the second time around. Thanks for your support and buns. See you for a latte and white chocolate. Keep up the good work.
Signing off for the last shift
