Certificates of service
Sworn members of SAPOL have, by tradition, been given certificates of service when leaving the job. These certificates have included an endorsement of conduct, qualified by such adjectives as exemplary, very good, good and satisfactory.
The Police Association has, at times, raised concerns with the Commissioner about the objectivity of the process of categorization.
Endorsement of conduct is not a requirement of current police regulations but rather a legacy of the previous regulations. Issues of conduct are now addressed within the Code of Conduct established under the Police Act and Regulations.
Commissioner Mal Hyde has advised that, effective forthwith, certificates of service issued under regulation 44 will not include an endorsement of conduct.
The Commissioner is to be commended for taking a decision consistent with the development of human-resource policies appropriate for a modern police service.
