Christophers law
One of the most tragic aspects of police work is that of investigating crimes against children. Our own Child Exploitation and Sexual Assault Units carry out excellent work in this area. But it is vitally important that we have the best possible legislation in this state and across Australia to protect vulnerable children from paedophiles.
I was privileged to meet Jim and Anna Stephenson at the Canadian Police Association Conference in Ottawa earlier this year. The Stephensons 11-year-old son, Christopher, was abducted and killed 13 years ago by a paedophile on parole from prison.
Jim and Anna are tireless advocates for victims rights. Since Christophers death, they have dedicated their lives to promoting a sex-offender registry. Last year, Canadas first such registry was established. Sex offenders released from prison in Ontario, or who move to the province, must register with police within 15 days or face a $25,000 fine or two years imprisonment.
The registry legislation is named Christophers Law. Canadas Sunday Sun reported that Christophers Law and the registry were a labour of love for the Stephenson family; a way of keeping Christophers flame flickering, not just in their hearts, but in safer communities across the province.
Christophers Law will be discussed at the Police Federation of Australia executive table. There, the federation will consider lobbying federal, state and territory governments for similar legislation across Australia.
A badge worn by both police and the public during
the campaign to establish the sex-offender registry.Regardless of the great sadness with which Jim and Anna Stephenson live, they must take great pride in knowing their work in establishing the registry will result in greater protection for innocent children. The Police Association salutes Jim and Anna.
