AGM
The Retired Police Officers Association held its annual general meeting in Fenwick Hall on July 4. The 51 members present heard annual reports from outgoing committee members.
Presidents report
RPOA president, Les Morris, thanked all committee members for their loyalty, particularly the ladies who helped stage the picnic and annual dinner.
Treasurers report
Treasurer Ken Phillips outlined the happenings of the past 12 months, including bus tours, the picnic, the annual dinner and the RPOA Christmas celebrations.
The RPOA started the financial year with a healthy balance and finished it with a reasonable one.
Ken informed the meeting that, owing to ill health, his wife, Shirley, would be resigning as RPOA secretary, and that he would himself resign to give all his time to her care. He wished the new committee well in its work over the next 12 months.
Welfare officers report
Tom Zacher reported that, sadly, 18 members had died over the past 12 months. George Way and Laurie McAvoy were two special fellows who are sadly missed by RPOA members.
Committee
President Morris declared all committee positions vacant and called on Don Bean to act as chairman for the appointment of office holders for the next financial year.
The appointees were:
- Les Morris (president).
- Lex Teague (vice-president).
- Ray Williams (secretary).
- Bev Schemmel (assistant secretary).
- Don ODoherty (treasurer).
- Tom Zacher (welfare officer).
Appointed as committee members were Raelene Holloway, Rob Thomson, Ray Holloway, Mary Renfrey and Pat Mitchell.
President Morris welcomed the new committee and said its members could work together for the benefit of the RPOA and its membership. He also thanked retiring committee members Ken and Shirley Phillips, Colin and Joyce Beames and Allan and Maureen Dwyer.
Coming events
The RPOA annual picnic will be held at Fort Largs on Sunday October 20. Increased catering costs might this year necessitate a small charge. The incoming committee will make a decision on this issue in the near future.
The RPOA annual dinner will be held at the Police Club on Thursday November 21. The cost of the dinner will be announced at a later date.
Those who wish to attend should book early, either in person at a monthly RPOA meeting or by contacting Raelene Holloway by telephone (8277 4009) or in writing (c/ the Police Association, 27 Carrington St, Adelaide, 5000).
Subscription fees
RPOA members who pay their subscription fees annually should be aware that those for the 2002-03 financial year are now due. Cheques should be sent to Treasurer Don ODoherty at 3 Margaret Court, Melrose Park, 5039. The amount is $15.60 per year.
