Annual Bowls Carnival

The sides competition began on the second day of the carnival. SAPBC sides played Western Australia, while New South Wales played against Victoria. The result was very close to last year’s: the SAPBC side beat WA (110 shots to 76, compared with 107 to 88), and Victoria scored a convincing win (107 to 86).

SAPBC rinks, skippered by Lindsay Yeo, Nick Zuvich, Trevor Gregory, Rex Heins and John McKnight, each had wins (19 shots to 18, 22/16, 20/18, 25/12 and 24/12 respectively).

On the second day, Victoria trounced the SAPBC side with a result (112 shots to 67) very similar to last year’s (109 to 78). The only winning skipper for this game was McKnight, who scored a one-shot win (23 shots to 22) with an unchanged rink. WA recovered from its loss to SA when, on the first day of the sides championship, it beat Queensland by 40 shots (122 to 82).

SA suffered a complete reversal of its form against Qld on the third day. It had won the game against Qld in the last carnival (125 shots to 86) but lost on this occasion (103 to 93). The result was surprising, given that Qld had lost to WA the previous day. WA provided another surprise when it beat NSW by the narrow margin of five shots (87 to 82).

At the end of the fourth day of the competition, the eventual winner had still not become apparent. Victoria beat Qld by the substantial margin of 66 shots (129/63), and SA turned the tables on NSW from last when it lost, 115 shots to 71. This time SA won by 10 shots (103/93). Qld and NSW had now been relegated to fourth and fifth spots on the points table. SA could not win but, with a favourable result on the fifth day, could have been runners-up to the eventual winner.

At the start of play on the fifth day, Victoria looked to be in the box seat, having won its three games to that point. It was matched up against the fast-finishing WA team. A win would cement the Victorian team in top spot on the table and make this its fifth win in six carnivals, with its only unsuccessful year being 1999. The other game, between NSW and Qld, was of little consequence, except that a loss by Qld would give NSW its one and only win.

The WA side was determined to make it to top spot on the ladder, but its loss to SA on the first day cost it dearly. The team beat Victoria against the odds (111 shots to 73), confirming Victoria as the winner, with WA slipping into second spot. SA managed a gallant third.

The final table for the sides championship stood as:

  Wins Points For Against
Victoria  420  327
WA  396  347
SA  375  384
NSW  364  381
Qld  332  447

The most successful rink for SA was again that of skipper John McKnight, who won three of the four games by a substantial margin.
