ASX website: primary source of share market information

The share market can sometimes be a daunting place, especially for people who have never invested before. The Australian Stock Exchange (ASX) has shed the mystery via its website (www.asx.com.au).

The site contains a wealth of information for people who are already in the market and those who do not know where to start. New investors can use the website to find out about the range of ASX courses and learning tools, access the glossary of share market terms, and find a stockbroker, while the more experienced investor can access share prices, company announcements and research.

Often, the hardest part about starting in the share market can be finding out how to take the first step. To help people learn the basics, the site offers a number of online courses that cater for all levels of investor – from first timers who want the basics to more advanced investors who want to expand their knowledge of options, warrants, and interest rate markets. ASX’s online courses offer a number of interactive learning tools that build confidence and create a greater understanding of shares, derivatives, and other securities ASX offers.

In addition to online courses, the ASX website also features share market games. The School’s Game is designed specifically for secondary students and runs twice a year, while the general public can engage in the Charity Share Market Game, which benefits Taronga Park Zoo and the Garvan Institute. The aim of these games is for players to try their hands at investing in the market in “real-world” scenarios, without investing with actual dollars. This means players are able to learn about the market by trading with their hypothetical portfolios, with prizes allocated for the most successful portfolios at the end of the game.

Investors can also register with My ASX to create their own watch lists, and access free online courses.

The website (www.asx.com.au) allows investors to increase their knowledge and improve their understanding of the share market.
