A members ultimate sacrifice
The tragic death of Senior Constable Bob Sobczak has shocked and deeply saddened the Police Association and its entire membership.
At the age of just 52, Senior Constable Sobczak died in the line of duty after a vehicle accident and left behind a wife and four children.
That he was such a fair and decent man, of good humour and compassion, makes his death all the harder to absorb.
To our great regret, the risk of death in the line of police duty hangs precariously over of all operational officers.
Until Snr Constable Sobczaks death, we had been fortunate in South Australia not to have lost a police officer in the line of duty since 1991.
Complacency was never evident during that 11-year period, but the whole police community must remain ever alert to even the slightest of risks. All must be mindful that police work and its dangers are inseparable.
But the challenge now is for Snr Constable Sobczaks family and workmates to survive their grief and continue their lives. So they can achieve those ends, the Police Association and the wider police community will, of course, provide any appropriate support.
Meanwhile, the association extends its deepest sympathy to Snr Constable Sobczaks family, colleagues and friends. May they find comfort in each others support and, indeed, the police family.
