SA POLICE BOWLING CLUB
Mixed Pairs Glenelg
About 28 associate and full SAPBC members took part in the annual mixed fours day at Glenelg Bowling Club in mid-February. The event had been promoted as a fun day.
Proceedings started on a high note, but the pairs knew nothing of what was to come. The organizers decided to change the rules of play. For the second game of eight ends, the men had to lead and the ladies had to skipper. As well, the men were obliged to deliver their bowls on the first end with their bad hand. That was, in most cases, their left. Nick Zuvich had the advantage of being ambidextrous. A recent shoulder operation had obliged him to learn to bowl with both hands.
For the third game, the men skippered again but their partners had to swap with their opponents. Wayne Grandfield entered into the spirit of the day by putting on lipstick and a skirt. He then passed himself off as one of the ladies.
By days end, everyone was a winner, particularly the ladies, who won some nice prizes.
Mixed Fours Elizabeth
More than 100 bowlers competed in two games of mixed fours at the Elizabeth Bowling Club on February 24.
The greens were running well and the weather was fine.
Playing on 13 rinks, the 26 teams had just finished their afternoon tea after the first game. On the three greens being used, the banks looked like organized bedlam when, out of the crowd, two very irate members approached the president and berated him about changing the rules of the game halfway through the day.
He tried to explain that, with the number of bowlers present, it was impossible to run the competition in the way they wanted it run.
The winner of the winners scoring 55 points of a possible 63 was an Elizabeth rink consisting of K. Kline (lead), B. Lee (second), F. Lomamby (third) and J. Lomamby (skipper).
Another Elizabeth rink skippered by J. Venning won the winner-of-the-losers prize, realizing the top mark of 34 points from one game won.
Club Fours Glenelg
Five rinks of SAPBC members supplemented by a couple of local players returned to the Glenelg Bowling Club for a fours challenge against Glenelg in early March.
Glenelg was the host this year, and turned up half an hour early no doubt to discuss tactics for the game.
The Santa Anna greens were a little slow but certainly playable.
The game began soon after 7:30pm and finished at the ringing of the bell at 9:30pm. Winning 10 of the 15 ends played with a score line of 24 shots to seven, the rink I skippered was the nights big winner. The rinks of F. Holden (16 shots to 12), T. Gregory (12 shots to nine) and I. Doering (17 shots to 15) were winners, with the rink of D. Dahlitz losing 11 shots to 17.
The police team won comfortably with a total score line of 80 shots, compared to the locals 60 shots.
