The Last Shift

Dear Andy

Please accept my resignation from the Police Association due to my resignation from SAPOL effective December 28, 2001.

I have decided to take up an opportunity to move back to the Riverland and work in the citrus industry (live on the river, boat in the shed… life’s pretty tough).

And to anyone who has been working in the Parks for over five years, get out now, as there is more to the outside world that can ever be offered there.

Goodbye and good luck.

Dear Andy

Please accept my resignation from the Police Association due to my resignation from SAPOL, my last day of service being January 21, 2002.

After many years of umming and ahing about it, Amy and I are moving to Queensland, where I will continue my career with the Queensland Police Service.

We are moving in search of a better climate and lifestyle. It was not an easy decision to make having to leave family and friends, but we don’t want to die wondering what it would be like to live in Queensland.

To all those people whom I have had the pleasure of working with over the past 11 years, I wish you well in the future and hopefully we will still see many of you when you come to Queensland or when we return to SA from time to time.

Dear Andy

I hereby tender my resignation from the Police Association due to my last day of service with SAPOL, being January 23, 2002.

When I look back at my 15.5-year career with SAPOL, I have many wonderful memories that will live with me forever. It is the police culture and camaraderie that I will miss the most. I have been fortunate to work with many wonderful and inspiring people at Thebarton barracks, Darlington, Henley Beach, Port Adelaide and numerous task forces throughout my career, as either a uniform officer or a detective.

I always believed that I would retire from SAPOL, however, I was recently offered outside employment within the private sector. After considerable deliberation, I have decided to accept this new position as a real estate investigator. My new employment will focus on exposing alleged frauds and dubious and immoral practices orchestrated by unethical real estate agents on consumers who have little or no experience in buying or selling real estate.

I am looking forward to my new career, goals and challenges. I hope my new employment gives me the same opportunities, experience, memories and friendship as SAPOL has offered me over the previous years.

My best wishes go out to all SAPOL members and PASA staff.
Kind regards
Craig Lean

Dear Andy

Please accept my resignation from the Police Association. My last day of service was January 30, 2002, as I have taken a position with SA Ambulance Service. I have enjoyed my time in SAPOL and I am grateful to have met and worked with some great people. I would also especially like to thank my husband, Andy, for his support and advice during my decision to leave the job. I wish you all the best in the future.

Dear Andy

I hereby tender my resignation from the Police Association as of February 10, 2002, being my last day of service as a police officer. I have taken up a position with the SA Police as a business consultant within the IS & T service as a public servant.

The decision to leave the police force was not an easy one, but the opportunities for further career advancement within IT will be far greater for me in the public service than if I remained as a police officer.

I thank all the great people I have come to know and work with over the last 21 years – it has been a lot of fun. It seems a long time since I was on foot patrols in Victoria Square back in 1981. I can honestly say that joining the police force has been one of the best things I ever did. All the best for the future. Gary Scott Acting Senior Sergeant 652/7 Information Systems and Technology

Dear Andy

I wish to tender my resignation from the Police Association, my last day of service being my retirement date – February 21, 2002.

Please accept my personal thanks for the assistance given to me and many of the members with whom I have served during my 38 years.

Thank you for the friendship and assistance given by members with whom I have served at Port Pirie, Tailem Bend, Streaky Bay, Leigh Creek, Mount Gambier, Whyalla and Kadina. A special thanks to the hard working and supportive public service employees, whose efforts quite often go unrecognized.

My extreme disappointment at the end of my career involves the extreme shortages of staff being experienced by many of the outstations in the York Peninsula area. Outstation members are expected at times to cover as many as two and three stations as part of their normal policing duties. A situation which is clearly unacceptable but which has prevailed for far too long without answer. Management clearly does not have the answer to the problem, but I remind them that staff are their most important resource. Many of the outstation members are being worked in totally unfair and I believe at times unsafe conditions.

I appreciate that many other police department areas also have similar problems. That in itself does not excuse the conditions under which the above members have to work.

On the eve of my retirement I have been asked by many members what my feelings are in regard to the status of the police department. In summary, I would say that we have always served the public and done the job well and generally members have enjoyed themselves in doing so. In the last five years or so the job is still done well, but it would appear that many members now do not have the same amount of satisfaction or enjoyment. A situation which clearly has to be addressed if we are to attract and keep our police officers.

In closing, I wish all members good health.
Brian Spencer
