SA POLICE BOWLING CLUB

Club Fours – Woodville

Five rinks of SAPBC bowlers competed in the bi-annual challenge night game at Woodville Bowling Club in January. The club had heard the Woodville side was “loaded” with some good players. This information was right.

The contest started on relatively slow greens under a clear sky. The night belonged to Woodville, and its name will appear on the trophy for this year.

Two SAPBC rinks managed a narrow win. One rink won by seven shots (18 to 11) while another – skippered by John McKnight – won by five shots (18 to 13) against a rink skippered by Woodville Bowling Club president, Peter Wynen.

Trevor Gregory’s rink managed a draw, and a rink skippered by Lindsay Yeo lost by one shot (14 to 15). But a rink skippered by Ron Allen lost to the Woodville rink of Lindsay Wasley. Wasley’s rink was said to be the “loaded” one, and the seven-to-30-shots score clearly indicated its supremacy.

Drawn Club Pairs – Holdfast Bay

It was an early start for 28 bowlers in the annual drawn-pairs competition in early February. The weather was pleasant and the Holdfast Bay Bowling Club greens fast, as 14 pairs lined to play three games.

At day’s end, a pair skippered by Cos Cavaiuolo – with Ron Allen leading – was the victor. The pair managed to win three games with an overall 55-shots-up winning margin. The pair of Graham Boyer (skipper) and Allan Wallace (leader) was runner-up, with two games won and 26 shots up. The third team was Ian Young (skipper) and Danny Fitzgerald, also with two games and 23 shots up.

Cops and Robbers Day – Modbury

The “cops” (mainly club members and other registered bowlers) donned their blue bandanas, while the “robbers” (non-bowlers) donned their red ones to start three games of 10 ends at Modbury Bowling Club on February 10.

The weather was good but slightly windy, as 126 players squeezed onto three of the club’s four greens, which were in excellent condition.

Secretary John Minagall took up the job of sergeant-at-arms, roamed the greens and watched for any infractions of the rules of bowls or etiquette. Offences were swiftly dealt with by way of a small fine deposited in his collection bucket. He also handed out gifts of prize money and vouchers for six-packs of beer and other prizes.

Later, attention was drawn to the achievements of June Dahlitz. She had won the state pairs title with Riina Bradbrook – also a Holdfast Bay bowler – in the past week. This was June’s third state title, having added to previous fours and pairs titles.

Joint winners and joint runners-up emerged at the end of the day: each rink won three games. The Modbury rink of Bernie Mullins and the rink skippered by Ron Allen each scored 83 points out of a possible 90, and each rink received the top cash prize.

The runners-up – rinks skippered by Modbury’s Barry Wilton and another Modbury rink skippered by Bob Komoll – each scored 81 points. These two rinks also received a cash prize.

A special cash prize was awarded to a rink of non-bowlers for being the most improved on the day. One rink – consisting of Alby and Dale Quinn (Holden Hill police station) and Gavin Black (police academy) – had not scored a shot in its game. The rink scored one shot in the second and two in its third.

A hushed crowd listened to addresses by Lauren Michels (Canteen) and Police Legacy secretary, Karl Faeth. Cheques for $600 (part proceeds of the day) were then presented to representatives of each organization.

The event prize money had been donated by the Police Credit Union, while the Police Club donated four slabs of beer.
