SA POLICE BOWLING CLUB

Men’s fours – Clearview

The synthetic greens and lights of the Clearview Bowling Club welcomed five rinks from the SAPBC and the Past Presidents Association Bowling Club on December 11 last year.

The evening was warm with a slight breeze blowing intermittently. The very strong westerly winds, which seem constantly to blow across Clearview’s greens, did not eventuate and bowling conditions were pleasant.

The Past Presidents were eager to turn the tables on the SAPBC side this year. Last year’s score of 84 shots to 45, when the SAPBC won convincingly, was reversed. The Past Presidents “whitewashed” the SAPBC side with 88 to 56 shots.

No SAPBC rinks won and the club’s best performed skipper was Lindsay Yeo, whose rink of A. Wallace (lead), G. Boyer (second) and G. Wakefield (third) went down by one shot – 16 to 15. Losses by other SAPBC skippers J. McKnight, P. Baehnk, T. Gregory and N. Zuvich accounted for the remaining 31-shot deficit.

Mixed fours – Lockleys

Lockleys Bowling Club hosted the last game for the year on December 16.

This was the first mixed fours event to be held at Lockleys in several years. Although the representation by the host club was slightly down on expectations, enthusiasm made up for lack of numbers. Many of the club’s bowlers were engaged in the state pairs competition on that day.

The “winner-of-winners”, scoring 60 of a possible 73 points, was a rink consisting of R. Lodge (lead), M. Yeo (second), M. Lodge (third) and skippered by L. Yeo.

A Lockleys rink skippered by P. Musson won the “winner-of-the-losers” prize, realizing the top mark of 35 points from one game won.

At the game was octogenarian and long-time member of the SAPBC and Lockleys, Harry J. Adams. He is still an active bowler for the Lockleys Club.

Harry has maintained his membership of the SAPBC since 1957 and remains the only living member of the SA team that competed in the inaugural National Police Carnival in 1957.

Harry’s achievements include victories in:

• A fours rink which won the club’s championship in 1958, ’59 and ’60.

• The club’s pairs championship in 1962, ’63, ’68, ’69 and ’75.

He was runner-up in:

• The club’s pairs championship in 1966.

• The singles championship in 1977.

• The 1968 state singles championship.

Harry attended the National Police Carnivals of 1957, ’59, ’66, ’70, ’72, ’74 and ’78. He was a singles semi-finalist in the 1970 Carnival.

He served on the SAPBC executive as assistant secretary in 1968-69 and as secretary from 1969-70 to 1973-74.

He served with the police at Renmark, Redhill, Ardrossan, Adelaide and Blackwood. Harry now lives in quiet retirement near the Lockleys Bowling Club.
