SA POLICE BOWLING CLUB

Club Singles Championship

Twenty-six full and associate members gathered on the greens of the Holdfast Bay Bowling Club in early November, 2001, to compete in the SAPBC’s annual singles championship.

The participants got off to an early start in cool conditions. A light rain fell toward the end of the day and made conditions unpleasant for those by then still competing.

The elimination of Lindsay Yeo and Nick Zuvich from the major competition in the first of the day’s four rounds was a shock. Both joined other bowlers in the play-off for the singles plate. Yeo and Zuvich were squared off in the plate semi-final – Zuvich won through to the final.

Interest abounded in the outcome of the other first- and second-round games in that same competition as there was some chance husband-and-wife team, Wayne and Karen Grandfield, might play off for the other plate finals spot.

In the second round, Karen put up a gallant fight against Graham Boyer, but Boyer was able to book a berth in the semi-final. Wayne, on the other hand, managed to triumph over Rex Kruger to book his berth. Boyer then triumphed over Wayne in the semi-final to play off against Zuvich in the plate final. Their game finished in light rain about 6:20pm.

After three rounds of the major competition, the number of competitors had reduced to four – Ivan Doering, Cos Cavaiuolo, Ken Furnell and Trevor Gregory. The four played off and after some excellent bowls on slightly heavy greens, Cavaiuolo and Gregory persevered to win through to the singles final.

Both finals will be played at Modbury on the SAPBC’s closing day on March 10, before a mixed fours competition also scheduled for that day.

Hope Valley mixed fours

SAPBC members visited the Hope Valley Bowling Club in November last year for the first time. Showers – which would have driven less-hardened bowlers from the green – were intermittent, and blustery, cold wind made conditions unpleasant.

Twelve SAPBC rinks were matched up against 12 from Hope Valley. The day followed the usual format of two games – the first of 11 ends and the second of 12 ends. The winners of the first game remained in the “winners” pool, while the losers continued in a “losers” pool.

At the end of a congenial day, the winner of the winners was a four skippered by a Hope Valley rink skippered by our own committee member, Danny Fitzgerald. His lady had cancelled at the last moment, leaving his four consisting of only three players.

The winner of the losers (on percentage) was another Hope Valley rink skippered by Brian Peacock.

The SAPBC visit was well received and future visits to Hope Valley are expected.

Jim Allen Trophy Day

Four rinks visited the spacious clubrooms of the West Croydon and Kilkenny RSL Bowling Club in mid-November last, to compete against its bowlers for the Jim Allen Trophy.

This one-time vibrant and active club had fallen on hard times and had to sell a part of one of its greens to trade out of trouble. It later became financially buoyant but, through the sale, lost a number of its better players and does not now appear competitive.

The evening was pleasantly warm, but the mosquitoes were huge and annoying. Three of four SAPBC rinks were victorious. The club won the night 82 to 34 shots.

Elizabeth mixed fours

The Elizabeth Bowling Club welcomed the SAPBC for a mixed-fours day last November.

About 130 competitors filled two-and-a-half greens and were eager to get the competition of two games (one of 11 ends and the other of 12) under way.

The weather was cold and blustery but very pleasant between gusts. The Santa Anna greens (the only ones in the metro area) ran well but lacked finish.

The winner of the winners was a rink skippered by Police Club member Graham Wakefield and the winner of the losers was an Elizabeth rink skippered by J Nicholls.
