SA POLICE BOWLING CLUB
Grange Round Robin
Sixteen SAPBC members competed in the third annual Sleeper competition in October. This involved teams from the Master Builders, Customs and host club, Grange.
Apparently lost, the Sleeper was missing from last years presentation to Master Builders, but was on hand this year.
After the first round and another bad loss by this writer the SAPBC team was in equal last position (two points) with Customs, behind Master Builders and Grange (both on 14 points).
After the second round, the police team had gained only four more points and still not improved its position. It was now running last behind Customs and Master Builders (each on 16 points) and Grange on 26 points. The last round did not greatly improve the position of the police team, which finished in last place with 10 points.
Master Builders again won the Sleeper with a total point score of 30. Grange and Customs each scored 28 points.
Sporadic showers eventuated during the day and the greens were a little slow.
Opening Day, Modbury
Cold, wet weather preceded the clubs opening day. Cloud cover over the Modbury Bowling Club greens in the early morning of October14 seemed to signal another terrible day. In a last-minute discussion, committee members considered a cancellation due to the weather.
Shortly before the start of proceedings, however, the clouds rolled away to reveal sunny skies. About 100 bowlers and friends gathered to witness the official opening by the club patrons representative, Assistant Commissioner (Crime) John White.
Club president, Peter Baehnk, introduced committee members, and life membership badges were presented to Nick Zuvich and Danny Dahlitz. The president then invited Assistant Secretary Karen Grandfield to roll the first jack and Mr White to roll the first bowl.
Although the greens were still somewhat slow because of rain over the previous days, participants keenly fought a close competition.
Emergency Services Day
The third annual competition involving players from the police, fire and ambulance services and host club, Edwardstown was slightly subdued in late October. The proceeds from this seasons round robin competition were designated to Police Legacy.
The weather appeared unpredictable but the rain held off to allow participants a good days bowls. What the players lacked in numbers they made up for with their enthusiasm. Some good results followed.
At the end of the day, the police team won the trophy with196 shots 67 shots up against a combined Edwardstown, ambulance and fire services team.
The best performed and consistent rink award went to Rex Kruger (lead), Lyall Savage (second), Allen Wallace (third) and skipper, Danny Dahlitz.
The organizers of this annual competition intend to expand it to include the State Emergency Service and the Country Fire Service.
