SA POLICE MOTORCYCLE CLUB

Woods Point trail ride

With a convoy of three four-wheel-drives towing eight trail bikes, eight club members travelled to the Victorian high country last October.

In Eildon – after a 12-hour drive – members met four Victorians who were to participate in the weekend’s ride.

With 20 years’ experience leading trail tours in this area, tour guide, Klaus Meuller (ex-Victoria Police), led the adventure.

After a well-deserved overnight rest, members met to begin a Saturday trail ride. After only minutes’ riding, they entered the densely wooded nearby forests and began an unbelievable ride through the high country.

Soon after, they negotiated their first “creek” crossing (which was more like crossing a river!). Completely soaked, riders continued along the never-ending tight trails that climb up the slopes.

Riders eventually made it to Mt Terrible where snow still lay on the ground. From this position, one could see Mt Buller a few mountains across. The view was fantastic and well worth the effort of riding there.

Members later ventured down the slopes through some “interesting” tracks and creeks, and ended up at Gaffney’s Creek for an overnight stop. Some of the creeks, however, had the better of a few riders. One slipped sideways and drowned his KTM 520 – twice. It had to be “emptied” of water so he could get going again.

This happened to some other riders as well, but all got going again after a few mechanical repairs.

The next morning, riders sorted themselves out and continued through some more tracks, which one can only describe as “trail bike heaven”. SA offers nothing like this.

Two riders nursing minor injuries took the easy route on the Sunday. The rest were led through some more creeks (one of which they couldn’t negotiate as it was seat-height) and tracks.

The last two days of trail riding was, at the very least, memorable for club members. Most are already planning the next venture there for early next year.

Mystery road ride

Matt Nairne and Lester Martin organized a mystery road ride that left from the Hackney Hotel on November18. The club’s road riders pulled their bikes out of the shed, dusted the cobwebs off and ventured around the flats and hills of Adelaide.

Coorong camp away

The club’s dirt riders attended possibly the last ride in the Coorong area, where members have been riding for the past 20-odd years. The owner has sold up, so participants made sure they had a great weekend’s riding on the huge sand hills and adjoining areas.
