AGM
Increased commitment to SA Police Legacy has brought improved services to legatees and wards, according to the organizations president, Brian Smith.
Speaking at the Legacy AGM in October, Mr Smith acknowledged Secretary Karl Faeth and Treasurer Peter Mason for their ongoing, dedicated support. He also thanked former liaison officer, Mrs Chris Williamson, for her excellent service through the past year, when she regularly visited many women.
Mrs Williamson has since won a position with Australian Customs and Sandra Deakin has assumed her former role.
With his closing remarks, Mr Smith thanked the Police Credit Union for its ongoing financial and material assistance and Legacy patron, Commissioner Mal Hyde, for his support.
Conference
Mr Smith with the secretary and new liaison officer attended the annual police legacies conference in Perth, where each state reported on its activities. He left the conference satisfied that SAs services and benefits compare well with other organizations. SA will host the conference in 2002.
Grants
The board increased education grants by 20 per cent this year. The highest grant is now $1,080. A total of $21,170 was paid out in the past year. Other benefits included:
- Birthday gifts ($1,600).
- Installation and monitoring of Constant Care telephones ($6,000).
- Installation of security devices and smoke detectors ($4,000).
- Supply of cordless telephones ($500).
- Social functions for legatees and wards ($8,000).
- Assistance with driving tests and car maintenance courses ($900).
- Country visits to legatees ($1,400).
Increased membership
To offer continuing assistance to legatees and wards, Police Legacy relies heavily on contributions from serving members. President Smith this year conducted a successful membership drive, which brought in 400 new members. As well, the secretary speaks to each recruit course at the police academy, where he achieves positive results.
Changes to constitution
This years AGM approved some changes to the constitution. One change allows for a police widow to be appointed to the board annually. Another gives the liaison officer a board position, and the opportunity for positive, meaningful feedback on the benefits offered and suggestions for additional ones.
New initiative
To serving members who lose their partners or experience some difficulty where Legacy can help, the board has resolved to offer assistance. Such members need only contact a board member or the secretary. The Police Welfare and Psychology Sections can also give members information about Legacy services.
