Monthly meeting

Fifty-eight Retired Police Officers Association members attended their monthly meeting on October 4. Police Credit Union member, Heather Hemmingway, entertained the gathering with a musical recital. All enjoyed her varied repertoire.

No entertainment is scheduled for the December 6 meeting, which is the RPOA Christmas party, at which fellowship is the theme of the day. The first meeting for 2002 is scheduled for February 7.

National Police Remembrance Day

Two committee members were invited to attend a Remembrance Day ceremony at Kingston-on-Murray at Banrock Station on September 28. Colin and Joyce Beames attended the event, which was run by the Riverland Police and commemorated the death of the first SA police killed on duty.

The officers were Corporal Wickham and MC Carter. Both drowned on May 7, 1847, while crossing the River Murray in an Aboriginal canoe that disintegrated.

The officers were buried at Kingston and a memorial cairn and plaque have been erected in their memory at the site. Both bodies were later exhumed and buried at the West Terrace cemetery. Colin and Joyce laid wreaths on behalf of the RPOA and the Riverland Police.

Picnic

A BYO picnic is scheduled for 11am on Thursday, November 15, at the Brownhill Creek Reserve, Mitcham. This picnic is designed for all members and those attending should bring chairs.

Retired members Police Association membership

Nine hundred-odd applications to join the Police Association were forwarded to retired members. The RPOA’s advice is that, of those applications, about 600 have been returned as accepted.

New Members

The RPOA welcomes new members, Kevin Johnson, David Gerhardy and John Attwood.
